Highlights

If you’re looking for a showy annual bloom in the sunny garden or the container, something you can just plant and forget about, try growing Gazanias.

Description

The gazania flower, named after the 15th-century Greek-Italian scholar Theodorus of Gaza, is a low-maintenance South African annual that will brighten up your hard-to-landscape spaces. Narrow but variably-shaped, dandelion-like leaves (narrow spoon-shaped to lobed) are silvery green.

  • Expect the plant to reach 6 to 18 inches (15-46 cm.) in height and about the same in spread as it trails on the ground.
  • A clumping mound of grass-like foliage produces Gazania treasure flowers. This easy-to-grow bloom is tolerant of poor, dry or sandy soil.
  • Heat and salty spray don’t deter its growth or beautiful blossoms either, making it a perfect specimen for oceanfront growing.
